What is Prosthodontics?
Prosthodontics is a branch of dentistry that pertains to the restoration of Oral health, comfort, function and appearance of the patient by restoring natural teeth and replacing missing teeth and contiguous structures with artificial substitutes.
Who is a Prosthodontist?
Prosthodontist is a specialist faculty in the field of dentistry who replaces missing and associated structures with artificial substitutes.
Complete Denture
Denture is a removable replacement of missing teeth and adjacent tissues to maintain function health and esthetics of the tissues. It is made of acrylic resin (plastic) sometimes in combination with metal.
Fixed Partial Denture
As the name suggests, fixed partial dentures or FPD are tooth replacements that are fixed permanently in the mouth and cannot be removed for routine cleaning by the patient. These dentures are made to take support from adjacent natural teeth. Unfortunately these dentures can replace only a few missing teeth.
Removable Partial Denture
It is removable type of replacement for multiple missing teeth designed to be removed by the patient daily for cleaning purpose.
Implant Dentistry
Implant dentistry involves the replacement of missing teeth by placing titanium roots back into the jaw bone to attach new teeth or even complete dentures.
Maxillofacial Prosthodontics
Maxillofacial is a branch of dentistry that deals with rehabilitation of congenital and acquired defects of the head and neck region. It is considered as a subspecialty of prosthodontics.
