Treatment of fractures of facial bones
In this era of fast moving traffic, there has been a steep rise in the incidence of road traffic accidents, interpersonal violence, leading to increasing challenges faced by the oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons are trained, skilled and uniquely qualified to manage and treat facial trauma - Intra oral and extra oral lacerations, fractured teeth, facial and jawbones.
Advances in Maxillofacial Trauma
Advances in the surgical techniques and specialized surgical instruments have allowed the oral and maxillofacial surgeon to treat fractures in and around the oral cavity with minimal disability and an easier recovery process for the patient.
In the past, thin wires were used to support and hold the fractured bones in the required position, as well as intermaxillary fixation or having their teeth and jaws wired together for 4-6 weeks, which not only was uncomfortable to the patient but oral hygiene was difficult to maintain.
Today miniature titanium plates and screws are used to fix the fractured bones in their original position leading to excellent functional and esthetic outcome.

Surgical approach thrrough the oral cavity allows to place large number of incisions to approach the fractures, leading to scar less surgery and enhanced cosmetics.
