Endodontics & Conservative Dentistry

This branch deals with tooth decay and its management. Tooth decay is the most common dental problem for which a majority of patients visit their dentist. This process of tooth decay starts due sugars which adhere to the tooth surface after eating food, especially sticky foods like sweets & chocolates. Therefore it is advisable to brush your teeth after every meal or at least after eating sweets.

Initial tooth decay is confined only to the enamel (outer most layers). In these cases and in cases where the decay involves the dentin (middle layer), the tooth can be filled. However, in cases where the decay involves the pulp a regular filling will not suffice. In such cases only two options remain. Either the tooth has to extracted or a root canal filling needs to be done.

  • Tooth decay often begins on biting surfaces, between the teeth, and on exposed roots.
  • Untreated, the cavity becomes larger.
  • Decay spreads beneath the enamel and can destroy the tooth structure.
  • Decay enters and infects the pulp and an abscess may occur. In situations I, II and III a filling will usually be enough to heal your tooth. But in situation IV the only treatments available are removal of the tooth and Root Canal Treatment of the tooth.

How can I detect tooth decay?

Tooth decay can be seen as blackish discoloration of the tooth, which may present with occasional pain on drinking water or taking sweets in the initial stages of tooth decay. However, once the decay enters the pulp the pain is continuous and may be associated with a swelling. Hence it is always better to get your dental decay treated as soon as you notice it.
